The building of Self-Confidence

Proposed course file material,Semester-2

Building up your Self-confidence

Self-confidence is your own estimation of your ability to sufficiently respond to and manage life’s challenges. It is context-dependent, meaning you might believe you are capable in one field but inept in another. Self-confidence is a learned mental quality that begins to develop in early childhood. As such, it can be nurtured and enhanced through practice, leading you togreater levels of accomplishment and overall satisfaction in life.

You Can Fake It. Simply adopting the posture, voice, mannerisms and thoughts of a confident person will, over time, actually engender feelings of self-assurance. Start by choosing a role model. Think of any person–alive or dead, real or fictional–whose attitude and confidence you admire. Consider how this person would move, act, think and feel in a certain setting.

“For any result you want in life, there’s a way of believing and behaving that will get it for you,” states Bill Harris, speaker, author and personal development coach for more than 35 years. “Simply find a person that has what you want, discover what they believe about it, how they act–and do that.”This process is called modeling. Successful people in all fields have found role models who inspired them and have utilized this strategy.

Developing a high degree of self-confidence requires a strong sense of personal integrity. You must live consistently, according to your innermost values and principles, while acting and thinking in agreement with your highest aspirations. This requires a clear understanding of what you hold to be right, good and worthwhile, then devoting yourself in act, word and thought to these values–despite life’s ups and downs. Being swayed by circumstances breeds self-doubt and diminishes self-assurance.

To discover your core values, envision the end of your life and write out a detailed account of how you would like to be remembered. This “self-eulogy” exercise should increase your overall awareness and provide insight about feelings of self-confidence.

Count Your Strengths

Make a list of 50 things that you do well. This task might seem daunting at first, but accomplishing it is well within your grasp. Everyone does many things at a high level of competency. However, over time people tend to take for granted all the things they’ve learned throughout life. If doing this takes a couple of days to complete, that’s fine. Go as far back in time as you need–a trophy in sports, a knack for spelling–list everything you can think of.

The goal is not to find the largest win, but to steer your mind toward regaining awareness of your ability to achieve.

Remember, that there is nothing inherently wrong with making mistakes. Choose one activity in which you felt fearful and experiment with it. Instead of being attached to any particular outcome, conceptualize the task by saying, “What would happen if I…” For instance, you might approach learning a new subject with, “What would happen if I absorbed my attention entirely into this issue for two hours straight?” or “What would happen if I posted notes of the material around the house, car, etc?” Then observe what does happen, without judgment.

Author and creator of the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series, Jack Canfield, says, “It’s not what happens during an event that discourages us, but what we tell ourselves afterwards.”

Withholding judgment allows you to look at a task with an attitude of learning. Continuing to practice this way of thinking tends to increase competence in a given area quickly and, in turn, fosters higher levels of self-confidence.

Toxic People

Avoid negative, critical people as much as possible. This may require making some tough decisions. Someone who is used to having you take the fall for their disappointments might not like losing a scapegoat. Still, developing an accurate sense of yourself requires avoiding those who drain your emotional resources and surrounding yourself with people who bring out your best. In business, people generally earn within $2,000 to $3,000 annually of their closest five associates. “Confidence is contagious. So is lack of confidence”. Removing negative people from your life is a vital step in building self-confidence.

The Disarray of Morals and Ethics

By Hermann

When it comes to Morals challenged by Ethics,it raises the question ! Which one would you vouch for and why? Its not uncommon for us to overhear conversations on a daily basis that are made up of values, ethics and values. However the question that arises is, do such discussions have any meaning to us? We need to understand that knowing the difference itself would set the mind racing, trying to identify the basic differences that segregate Morals from Ethics is in itself a challenge. However how many of us think about this? And if we have the intuition to do so, why don’t we do it?

Defining the thoughts of the mind is complex, however it is a self-made decision in the end. The query that arises once more is why don’t we decide?

The understanding on morals and ethics for many boils down to the same thing. Most believe that they are a set of values that can be applied to define between a just decision and an in-just decision, however the deeper the subject is probed, unique differences are discovered between morals and ethics. And the way individuals and groups of people alike start applying these rules , they gradually are able to isolate that difference between morals and ethics. Eventhou, theses days many are aware of theses differences, why don’t we apply them to the maximum, why don’t we justify on our actions and why don’t we start learning about these values?

Differences when quoted can be many, explanations maybe many, but what is your stand on this point? A simple explanation for  this subject is ,behavior related to a group of people can be identified as ethics, but we shouldn’t confuse the understanding of this subject as it could confuse indentifying values and differences. When speaking of morals , they are more individual related, and to a very large extent would be personal from a logical point of view.Till this moment what were your definitions? We all live in a society which contributes vastly towards a creation of rules, and this is an occurrence that has been in the making for centuries, and it has been rules in society that have created the morals that we abide and live by, and we learn to live by these morals, failing which we would not be termed as moral individuals.Childhood teachings of ours have taught us,to  do the right things and avoiding the wrong things. We once again ask ourselves how much of these morals that we were taught as children have we integrated into our lives and if we haven’t, why haven’t we done so?

Decisions at the end of the day is a responsibility of each individual, and choices opted for would be scrutinized by the society. Do you think society should be held responsible for what an individual turns into? There is no justification between correct and incorrect, there would only be an outcome of decisions and acions, and looking at the way society has been for thousands of years, immorality would always be punished. Do you think we can change that today?

Looking at ethics and what they relate to , they can be categorized as a collection of percepts and notions that we select to follow all our life , however ethics cannot be differentiated and nor can they be defined as incorrect or correct and the sole reason is that society harbors severe confusion on the same. Why do you think society is so well spoken of when these are the obstacles in place? When speaking of huge multinational companies, lets talk about an industry that produces fertilizer. They overwork workers, resort to cutthroat competition , utilize all forms of business tools that are considered un-ethical ,underpay the employees ,however there isn’t anything wrong in the system, as ethics which the organization has in place says “We should make to maximum profit with the minimum investment” How comfortable would we be to adjusting with such principals?

Ethics Are Corporate and categorizes the kind of conduct of a group a person is associated with , be it related to an Industry ,A Government body ,continient, country or a group of people. They all live and work within boundaries that have certain severance attached, so it has been studied and noted that at any given time group ethics would overrun an individual morals, which makes the fact beings pointed out. What is the point of personal morals, when ethics of the group you are involved in overrides personal principals?

The most common happening over the last thousand years, has been war, millions lose lives ,weapons of mass destruction are used and no one questions ,why so? Ideally speaking as head of a country I wouldn’t be able to walk into the house of someone and take his life ,but the ethics of my country empower me to employ air power and reduce my country’s enemy to ashes. How can theses actions be justified when you have a long never ending court procedure to follow every little crime that is committed?

This brings the conclusion towards the Power of Ethics.Ignore your morals and face the consequences, on the other hand Ethics are extended to coincide with various atrocities which come in multiple forms, and these are the results of those who hold the reins to power. So why doesn’t anyone raise their voices? Over time there have been several unethical terms which are accepted today mostly because of those who hold the reins to power, so change has been inevitable. We are always confused since the start about the concept of Morals and Ethics , but in the end ,it’s those who are in power who have the final say.To understand the differences between Morals and Ethics requires the study of wide subject areas, starting from general understanding,to literature, psychology, cross continent politics, common affairs and religious study, however it remains as an unsolved chapter till date, but  how would you define this chapter ?
